Definition

A Data Object together with its Representation Information.; Any type of knowledge that can be exchanged. In an exchange, it is represented by data. An  example is a string of bits (the data) accompanied by a description of how to interpret a string of bits as numbers representing temperature observations measured in degrees Celsius (the representation information). Here also understood as part of the associated knowledge as component of the data set. It includes mission descriptions, instrument description and characteristics, products specifications, algorithm description, Cal/Val procedures, mission and instrument performances reports, quality related information. Representation Information, Packaging Information and Preservation Description Information are also part of the information as understood in this context.
