Automatic Weather Station

A weather station is a facility with instruments and equipment for observing atmospheric conditions to provide information for weather forecasts and to study the weather and climate. The measurements taken include temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and precipitation amounts. Wind measurements are taken as free of other obstructions as possible, while temperature and humidity measurements are kept free from direct solar radiation, or insolation[1]

One of the most used automatic weather station is the Wireless Vantage Pro2 Plus Weather Station (DAVIS)

It includes display console/receiver, Integrated Sensor Suite (ISS), and mounting hardware. ISS includes automatic emptying rain collector, temperature and humidity sensors, anemometer, solar radiation sensor, UV sensor, sensor mounting shelf, and solar panel. Temperature and humidity sensors are enclosed in the standard radiation shield.
The Solar Radiation Sensor is used for the measurement of evapotranspiration for day, month, and year; solar radiation intensity and temperature, humidity, sun, wind direction and speed were also recorded. The UV Sensor is used for the measurement of UV Dose and UV Index.

The sensor in ISS which has ±0.5°C accuracy is used for the outside temperature. Update interval for the output temperature is 10 seconds. Wireless transmission range is up to 1000' (300 m) line of sight. Typical range through walls under most conditions is 200' to 400' (60 to 120 m). Measurement aims: To measure climatic conditions of the target area mainly including
rainfall, relative humidity, temperature, evaporation, and pressure on a daily basis.
Set-up time: 30 minutes for two researchers to set up, and about 30 minutes to dismantle.
Transportation: The instrument breaks down into three parts as:

  • 410 mm x 264 mm x 330 mm box - 6 kg
  • 378 mm x 327 mm x 594 mm box – 6 kg
  • Mounting tripod

Power Requirements: ISS is solar powered. ISS includes Duracell Ultra 123 3V Lithium. Console may be powered using the included AC-power adapter or with three C batteries. [2]
